A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and SOAR NY Redefine the Relationship Between Garment and Graphic Design

Apr 13, 2026
A collaborative project between A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and New York–based design studio SOAR NY, titled TYPE-XV SOAR NY project, has officially launched.

For A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE—an initiative that has continuously expanded the possibilities of clothing through experimental making—this collaboration marks a shift toward rethinking the very relationship between garments and graphic design. Rather than layering visuals onto form, the project explores how structure, movement, and time can generate a new mode of expression.

Reframing the Role of Graphics in Fashion
In fashion, graphics have traditionally functioned as surface decoration—flat imagery applied onto three-dimensional garments. Their impact has largely depended on visual immediacy.

This project proposes a fundamental departure from that convention.

By bringing together A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE’s engineering-driven approach to clothing and SOAR NY’s dynamic graphic language, graphics are no longer treated as surface elements. Instead, they are embedded into the very structure of the garment. What emerges is not something merely seen, but something experienced through wear—design that unfolds through the body.

“Baked Stretch”: Graphics as Structure
At the core of the project lies A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE’s proprietary pleating technique, “Baked Stretch.”

Through the a process in which specially treated fabric expands under high heat, flat fabric transforms into volumetric form. Within this process, graphics are not printed as external decoration but integrated into the structure itself. The pleats become part of the visual language, dissolving the boundary between form and image.

Moreover, the design begins at the level of pattern construction. Graphic elements are carefully aligned with structural lines, ensuring both visual coherence and spatial integrity. In this sense, garment and graphic are conceived as a single system from the outset, rather than separate layers brought together after the fact.

Form in Motion: The Emergence of Ephemeral Beauty
A key concept underlying the project is the departure from fixed notions of beauty. As garments are worn, their forms shift in response to the body’s movement. Pleats expand and contract; graphics stretch and transform. The visual impression is never static, but continuously evolving.

What emerges is a form of beauty that exists only in motion—a fleeting, momentary configuration shaped by time and physical interaction. This approach resonates with the foundational philosophy of A-POC: clothing not as a finished object, but as something completed through the participation of the wearer.

SOAR NY and the Notion of “Momentum”
For SOAR NY, one of the key concepts in SOAR NY’s graphic practice is “Momentum”—a sense of energy and imminent movement embedded within form.

In this collaboration, that idea finds a new dimension. Momentum is no longer confined to visual composition; it becomes embodied. Lines and colors interact with the movement of the wearer, transforming graphic design into a lived, kinetic experience.

The meeting of a New York–based studio’s global sensibility with a Japanese brand’s technological and conceptual framework opens a new territory—one where graphic design extends beyond vision into the realm of physical perception.

From Garment to Environment
The project extends beyond clothing itself.

In retail spaces such as ISSEY MIYAKE GINZA / 442, A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE AOYAMA, and KYOTO, the graphic language is translated into spatial design. Displays, mannequins, and environments are reconfigured to reflect the same visual system, creating a unified experience.

Here, garment, body, and space form a continuous field—suggesting a broader understanding of not only as product, but as an experience shaped by environment and interaction.

A Project Conceived for a Global Context
The project launched in Japan in March 2026, with further rollouts planned across Europe—including Paris, Milan, and London—as well as online platforms.

From its inception, the project has been conceived within a global framework. The collaboration between a Japan-born brand and a New York–based studio does not remain within local narratives; instead, it engages with an international visual language shaped by diverse cultural perspectives.

The Products
The project introduces three distinct graphic series.

TYPE-XV 001 features dresses and pants that fully integrate structure and graphics, representing the core of the collaboration. TYPE-XV 002 and TYPE-XV 003 translate the concept into A-POC’s signature seamless knit T-shirts, offering a lighter yet equally considered expression.

Each piece is designed not merely as clothing, but as a visual experience that evolves with the wearer’s movement.

Beyond the Boundary of Garment and Graphic
A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE has long questioned the fundamentals of clothing—its structure, its process, and its relationship to the body. This project extends that inquiry by incorporating graphic design as an integral component.

What is proposed here is not simply a new aesthetic, but a shift in how design itself is understood.

As garments and graphics converge, the boundary between fashion and design begins to blur—suggesting new possibilities that may continue to expand the possibilities of both fashion and graphic design in the years to come.
