Reebok × atmos × Ghost in the Shell—An INSTAPUMP FURY That Translates Cyborg Aesthetics into Form

Apr 10, 2026
Japanese sneaker retailer atmos has unveiled a triple collaboration with Reebok and Ghost in the Shell, reimagining the iconic INSTAPUMP FURY through the lens of cybernetic identity. The model is scheduled for release on April 18.

Rather than functioning as a straightforward character collaboration, the project can be read as an attempt to translate one of the franchise’s central themes—the relationship between body and technology—into a wearable form.

The Image of a Connected Body
At the core of the design is a defining visual associated with Major Motoko Kusanagi, the protagonist of Ghost in the Shell, originally created by manga artist Masamune Shirow. The scene—where cables extend from her back, linking body to network—has long symbolized the series’ exploration of augmented identity and the dissolution of boundaries between self and system.

In this model, that motif is extended across the upper, as if the cables themselves were spreading outward. The result is a sneaker that does not simply reference the work visually, but attempts to embody its conceptual language.

Narrative Embedded in Detail
Motoko Kusanagi’s visual appears on the insole, while the reverse side of the tongue features the phrase “People love machines in 2029 A.D.”—a line that situates the design within the timeline of the series.

Additional details include “攻殻機動隊” on the left heel and “GHOST IN THE SHELL” on the right, reinforcing the duality between Japanese origin and global recognition.

The HEXALITE cushioning and Reebok branding are rendered in a turquoise blue palette, evoking the digital and cybernetic atmosphere that defines the franchise.

Structure Meets Concept
Originally introduced in the 1990s, the INSTAPUMP FURY remains one of Reebok’s most distinctive silhouettes, known for its laceless construction and pump-based fit system. Its structure—designed to adapt directly to the wearer’s foot—can itself be read as a kind of interface between body and machine.

In that sense, the alignment with Ghost in the Shell feels less like an overlay and more like a convergence, where the philosophy of the source material resonates with the functional logic of the shoe.

From Object to Experience
Even the shoebox extends the design language, completing a cohesive visual narrative.

As one of the closest objects to the body, sneakers inherently mediate the relationship between physical presence and external environment. Within that context, this collaboration invites wearers to engage—however subtly—with the questions that Ghost in the Shell has long posed:
Where does the body end, and where does something else begin?
