A new store dedicated to Okayama denim, “AOKI DENIM,” has opened in Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s most visited destinations for international travelers.
Located just steps from Kaminarimon Gate—an iconic landmark and gateway to traditional Tokyo—the store introduces a new way to experience Japanese craftsmanship within a global tourist context.
Okayama Denim—Japanese Craft Recognized Worldwide
Okayama denim, produced primarily in the Kojima district of Okayama Prefecture, is widely regarded as one of the highest-quality denims in the world. Its reputation is built on a deeply rooted production system, where dyeing, weaving, sewing, and finishing are often carried out within the same region. This level of control allows for exceptional material quality and consistency, elevating denim from everyday wear to a form of craftsmanship.

AOKI DENIM—Reframing Denim Through Japanese Aesthetics
AOKI DENIM is backed by a denim factory established in 1961, and builds upon this technical foundation by incorporating elements of Japanese aesthetics. Its designs draw inspiration from traditional garments such as kimono—known for their flat construction and structural logic—while reinterpreting them into contemporary silhouettes. The result is a hybrid language that merges Western denim culture with Japanese sensibility.

The store also features FAGASSENT, a brand worn by internationally recognized musicians, further expanding its creative scope.
Through these approaches, denim is repositioned not simply as clothing, but as a medium through which Japanese culture is translated into a contemporary, global context.
Space—An Immersive “Crimson” Experience
The Asakusa store is composed of two compact floors, each approximately 20 square meters, designed as an immersive environment centered around the concept of “Japanese modern.”The first floor is conceived as a “dreamlike” space, inspired by the emotional intensity of Japan’s mid-Meiji period. The ceiling and back walls are enveloped in deep crimson, illuminated by warm lighting that enhances the depth of the color and creates a surreal atmosphere.

Courtesy of AOKIHIFUKUThe second floor, titled “RED INFINITY,” is a fully immersive environment where walls, ceiling, and floor are all enveloped in red. Here, more experimental and luxury-oriented pieces are presented, including Nishijin-denim hybrids and collections from FAGASSENT.
Within this space, denim is no longer presented as a product alone, but as part of a spatial and sensory experience.
Asakusa as Context
Asakusa occupies a unique position within Tokyo, where historical identity and global tourism intersect. In this context, AOKI DENIM offers an alternative to conventional souvenir culture. Rather than presenting items for casual consumption, the store invites visitors to engage with the deeper narratives of Japanese craftsmanship.
