Diptyque Refines Its Iconic Classic Candle—Expanding Its “Herbarium of Scents” with Five New Fragrances

Apr 9, 2026
Diptyque has reimagined its iconic Classic Candle (190g), a defining object of the Maison since its introduction in 1963. The renewed collection will be released on April 16, 2026.

Rather than a simple update, this evolution can be understood as a reconsideration of the relationship between material, scent, and time—an approach that has long underpinned Diptyque’s universe.

The Candle as an Object
Since its inception, the Classic Candle has existed not merely as a fragrance, but as an object capable of transforming space. Once lit, it brings together light and scent, introducing a subtle shift in the perception of time. Everyday interiors take on a more atmospheric, almost theatrical dimension—an experience closely tied to the Maison’s origins.

This approach reflects the spirit of Diptyque’s three founders, whose shared sensibility bridged decorative arts, travel, and imagination. The candle has remained a medium through which that creative freedom is expressed.

A Subtle Evolution of Design
For this renewal, Swiss-French designer Julie Richoz has reworked the glass vessel. The essential codes remain intact—the oval silhouette, the black-and-white label—yet the surface of the glass is now gently sculpted, creating a more nuanced dialogue between object and graphic.

The Maison’s signature “dancing letters” have also been given greater dimensionality, reinforcing their presence as both typography and visual identity. Originally conceived by co-founder Desmond Knox-Leet, inspired by cryptographic forms, this typographic language remains central to Diptyque’s aesthetic.

The gesture here is not transformation, but refinement—an evolution that preserves the essence of the object.

Savoir-Faire and Precision
Diptyque’s candles are produced in France, where a combination of artisanal expertise and controlled processes ensures consistency and quality. Each stage—from the composition of wax and fragrance to the selection of the wick—is calibrated according to the specific characteristics of each scent.

The interaction between flame and fragrance plays a crucial role: the burn must be even, the scent faithful, the experience continuous.

The “Herbarium of Scents”
Through its collection of more than 50 fragrances, Diptyque has developed what it describes as a “herbarium of scents”—a sensory landscape inspired by nature yet reinterpreted through olfactory composition.

In 2026, this herbarium expands with five new fragrances, each conceived as an invitation to travel—less toward a specific place than toward an imagined landscape.

Created in collaboration with perfumers Alexandra Carlin and Olivia Giacobetti, these additions extend the Maison’s olfactory vocabulary.

Five New Fragrances
Café
Warm roasted notes unfold alongside subtle woody nuances, evoking the comforting depth of freshly ground coffee.
Ortie (Nettle)
A vivid green composition, combining the sharp freshness of nettle with softer vegetal undertones.
Sésame Noir (Black Sesame)
Toasted sesame develops into a rich, almost addictive scent, layered with deep woody accords.
Rhubarbe (Rhubarb)
A lively interplay of fruity acidity and green facets, balancing contrast and harmony.
Shiso
Fresh and aromatic, with spicy accents and a delicate almond nuance, suggesting a distinctly Japanese olfactory sensibility.

Each fragrance operates as a fragment of a larger landscape—one that invites exploration rather than direct recognition.

Refill as a New Gesture
From September 2026, the Classic Candle will introduce a refill system, extending the life of the glass vessel. By reusing the container, the Maison estimates a reduction of approximately 22% in carbon footprint, positioning the candle as a more sustainable object over time.

Beyond its environmental implications, the refill introduces a new ritual—one that encourages a longer, more continuous relationship with the object itself.

The Ritual of Flame
Alongside the candle, Diptyque expands its decorative collection, designed to enhance the presence of flame. Objects crafted in borosilicate glass and unglazed porcelain interact with light—reflecting, diffusing, and amplifying its movement.

In this context, the candle becomes more than a source of scent; it becomes part of a ritual—an experience that unfolds from the moment it is lit to the moment it is extinguished.

Beyond the Object
The renewal of the Classic Candle brings together design refinement, new fragrances, and a more sustainable system. Yet these elements converge toward a broader question—how to engage with time through objects.

Diptyque’s Classic Candle continues to evolve without losing its identity, suggesting that its essence lies not in change, but in continuity.
