This contemporary art festival takes place on 12 islands in the Seto Inland Sea, as well as in Takamatsu, Shikoku, and Uno, Okayama Prefecture. The first festival, the Setouchi Triennale, was held three years ago and garnered rave reviews. This year, the festival will span three periods: spring, summer, and fall. The festival's attractions include Naoshima, a world-renowned mecca for contemporary art, home to numerous museums, and the Teshima Art Museum (artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa), which opened in 2010. On Inujima, a new initiative by architect Kazuyo Sejima, known for her work on the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, will also be featured. Other must-see artworks scattered among the islands' pristine landscapes include works by artists from Japan and abroad, with a total of 200 pieces to be exhibited in various locations. This event not only showcases the natural beauty of the Setouchi region to the world, but also fosters interaction between artists and visitors and local residents, contributing to the revitalization of the region.
With the number of new island venues increasing, it looks like we'll be able to enjoy even more of the charm of the islands and the sea, and the collaboration of rich nature and contemporary art.
