In recent years, the beauty industry has embraced an increasingly personalized approach through AI and digital technology. From skin diagnostics to facial analysis, tailored recommendations have become a familiar part of the beauty experience. Yet beyond data and algorithms lies a more fundamental question: how can technology help reveal an individual’s unique beauty?

Japanese makeup artist brand Shu Uemura will open its new OMOTESANDO HILLS flagship store, shu:ARTstage, on June 19, 2026, on the first floor of the Omotesando Hills West Building. Building upon the spirit of the brand’s first Beauty Boutique, opened by founder Shu Uemura in Omotesando in 1983, the new space introduces a beauty experience where AI-powered analysis and the artistry of professional makeup artists work together.
On June 19, 1983, Shu Uemura opened his first Beauty Boutique in Omotesando. At a time when beauty retail was still highly conventional, the store introduced an open-tester concept that allowed visitors to freely explore products for themselves.

The idea felt closer to an artist opening the doors to a creative studio than a traditional cosmetics counter. That spirit would go on to influence the beauty industry for decades.
More than forty years later, the brand returns to Omotesando with a new flagship destination that both honors its origins and looks toward the future of beauty.

One of the most notable features of shu:ARTstage is the introduction of the brand’s first-ever 3D Face Scanning service.
In approximately one minute, AI analyzes facial structure and proportions, visualizing facial data based on principles of balance and symmetry. The technology offers a new way to understand individual facial characteristics through objective analysis.

As data-driven beauty services continue to expand across the industry, Shu Uemura’s approach stands apart for a simple reason: the scan itself is not the final destination.
The results generated through 3D Face Scanning serve as a starting point rather than a conclusion.
Using those insights, Shu Uemura’s makeup artists interpret and translate the data into personalized beauty recommendations. Objective analysis and human intuition come together to create an experience that feels both precise and deeply personal.

In an era of increasing efficiency and automation, the final interpretation is entrusted to humans. This stance reflects the brand's philosophy, "Makeup is an art," which has been passed down since its founding.
The name shu:ARTstage itself offers a clue to the concept behind the space.
Rather than functioning solely as a retail environment, the flagship has been conceived as a stage where makeup artists and visitors explore individual beauty together. Personal makeup lessons and exclusive services further reinforce the idea that each visitor becomes part of the experience.

The store’s design reflects this vision. Renderings reveal a space defined by Shu Uemura’s signature red, creating an immersive atmosphere that feels closer to a stage set than a conventional beauty counter.

To mark the opening, Shu Uemura will also collaborate with contemporary artist En Iwamura.
Known internationally for his “Neo-Jomon” series inspired by ancient Japanese pottery and cultural artifacts, Iwamura brings his distinctive visual language to exclusive shopping bags and gift-wrapping designs available only at the Omotesando Hills flagship.

The collaboration continues a longstanding dialogue between art and beauty that has been central to the brand’s identity since its founding.

When Shu Uemura opened his first boutique in Omotesando, his ambition was not simply to sell cosmetics, but to create a place where people could discover beauty for themselves.
In 2026, that vision evolves through new technology while remaining rooted in the same belief.
AI analyzes. Artists interpret. Individuals discover new dimensions of their own beauty.
With shu:ARTstage, Shu Uemura presents a compelling vision of where beauty experiences may be headed next.
