HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE is presenting the special exhibition “Amid Impasto of Colors” at Gallery 3 of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo. The exhibition runs from March 14 to April 12, 2026.

The exhibition focuses on the fieldwork and research process that led to the Spring/Summer 2026 collection. Carrying brushes and sketch materials, the design team traveled across Italy to observe and collect colors found in everyday environments.

Cities are filled with colors that reflect the climate, culture, and daily life of each place. Weathered architectural surfaces, vegetables arranged in local markets, and the constantly shifting hues of the sea all became sources of inspiration. These everyday tones were translated into garments through HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE’s distinctive pleating techniques, creating clothing that evokes the landscapes and atmosphere of Italy.

At the exhibition, 44 pleated fabric colors are displayed, selected from more than 200 colors gathered during the fieldwork. Each shade was carefully developed through repeated color mixing based on the collected samples. Layers of paint and traces of experimentation reveal the gradual process through which these tones were refined.

Here, color is presented as more than a visual element. Accumulated and layered, it becomes intertwined with memory, atmosphere, and landscape. Suspended pleated fabrics create a spatial composition where visitors can experience color almost as a physical environment.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the “COLORS OF ITALY” series—featuring the same 44 colors used in the display—will be presented and available for purchase for three days starting March 27 at HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE / ROPPONGI.

Colors gathered from the streets and landscapes of Italy are transformed into garments through pleats.
