
UNIQLO launched "UTme!", a new app service in Japan on May 19th that allows users to create original T-shirts using a smartphone or tablet application. It is compatible with iOS and Android.
"UTme!" is one of the 2014 projects for UNIQLO's T-shirt brand "UT," which was launched in 2003. Purchases can be made through the app for 1,990 yen plus tax and shipping. Available in sizes XS to XL, the shirt is available in plain white only. It features a circular knit design with no side seams. As with UT, NIGO serves as the creative director for "UTme!".
There are three design methods: "PAINT," which allows users to paint with their fingertips, "TYPOGRAPHY," which allows users to input alphabet letters, and "PHOTO," which allows users to paste images. Afterward, users can add effects like "SPLASH," which creates an ink splatter effect by shaking the device, "GLITCH," which shifts the image, and "MOSAIC," which creates a mosaic effect. Even amateurs can create a design they consider acceptable. By pressing the purchase button, customers can enjoy their design the next day without visiting a store. Rei Matsunuma of the Global Marketing Department announced the service and demonstrated it at the Uniqlo Ginza store. "We hope people will use it for a variety of occasions, such as matching teamwear for live concerts and live shows, or as gifts. We hope people will enjoy it and become Uniqlo fans." While the service is currently only available in Japan, he added, "We believe there is a global demand, so we want to respond as soon as possible." To coincide with the release of "UTme!", a limited-time printing machine will be set up on the 5th floor of the Uniqlo Ginza store from May 20th to mid-August. Visitors can experience and observe T-shirt printing with "UTme!" on-site.
