Parisian bonbons meet Kyoto candy in these crochet design candies [A souvenir for Kyoto's stylish people]

Jul 29, 2013

This is our series on stylish gifts selected by Kyoto's most sophisticated people. Our 10th installment is "Cloché," a Kyoto candy specialty shop that opened in February of this year and was introduced to us by Keiko Oshino, owner of the leather workshop Rim. These designer candies are made using traditional Kyoto candy methods. "When an acquaintance first gave them to me, they were so pretty I thought they were foreign candy," says Keiko Oshino. Since then, she's often used them as casual gifts for friends. Oshino's Rim leather accessories, crafted entirely by hand without machines, are both beautifully colored and extremely popular with women. The bags are available for pre-order only twice a year, and orders fill up within a few days. "Cloché," a Kyoto candy specialty shop, opened in February of this year on Ayanokoji Street, one block south of Shijo Street. The pure white space, devoid of any gaudy decorations, is wall-to-wall glass, making it a striking presence amid the traditional streetscape.

Kyoto candy is manufactured by Imanishi Confectionery, a company with a 135-year history. Inspired by Kyoto's sister city, Paris, they maintain traditional manufacturing methods while creating vibrant colors and a wide variety of flavors never before seen in Kyo candy.

The blue and pink yogurt flavor is "Umbrellas of Cherbourg," the green and pink sakura mochi flavor is "Kyo Sakura," the yellow and white striped lemon flavor is "Versailles," and the red and white striped plum flavor is "Kotoiwai" (Celebration). The names, color combinations, and flavors are all fun to pair. Approximately 24 varieties are always available, including seasonal limited editions.

"The pure white packaging, inspired by the collar of a kimono, is lovely. Not only is it cute, but the origins of the names and color combinations are also included, which is very stylish."
