The 2016 (34th) Mainichi Fashion Grand Prize award ceremony was held in Tokyo on November 2nd, with FACETASM designer Hiromichi Ochiai receiving the Grand Prize. Ochiai was previously selected as the recipient of the 2013 (31st) New Designer Award and Shiseido Encouragement Award, making him the fastest recipient in history to receive the Grand Prize just three years after receiving the New Designer Award. At the award ceremony, Ochiai commented, "I'm surprised to have received the Grand Prize so soon, but I also think this is a sign of the times, and the result of keeping up with the speed of the times. The Mainichi Fashion Grand Prize is something FACETASM has always felt it was essential to receive. We will continue to share our creations with the world in order to create new value." The New Designer Award and Shiseido Encouragement Award went to PLASTICTOKYO designer Keisuke Imazaki, and the Kujiraoka Amiko Award, given to those who have made outstanding contributions to the fashion industry, went to Kaihara Co., Ltd. Chairman Ryoji Kaihara. The Topic Award went to Shogi player and 74th Meijin, Amahiko Sato, and the Special Award went to BEAMS JAPAN.
Imazaki said, "I owe it to the people who supported me to receive the Newcomer Award despite my inexperience. I hope to use this award as an opportunity to make even greater strides." Kaihara added, "We've faced many crises in the past, wondering if the company could continue, but each time we faced a crisis, we started something new, like wide-width kasuri and denim, which are unique in the world. That's our strength." Sato expressed his joy, saying, "I believe that this award was made possible by the fact that a Shogi player who loves fashion has achieved the Meijin title." BEAMS President Hiroshi Shitara said, "I am thrilled to receive this award in this milestone year, marking our 40th anniversary. Going forward, we want to not only promote the best things and good things from around the world, but also share Japan's craftsmanship and otaku culture with the world as Team Japan."
The party following the award ceremony also featured a fashion show showcasing PLASTIC TOKYO's 17SS collection.
