Who Designs the Memories We Take Home? — Starbucks’ “Discovery Series” Reimagines Japan’s Local Culture

The way we bring home memories from a journey has changed over time.

There was a period when photographs of famous landmarks and classic souvenirs served as the primary reminders of a trip. Today, however, travelers increasingly seek something more intangible: experiences that evoke the time they spent in a place, the people they encountered, and the atmosphere that surrounded them.

On July 22, 2026, Starbucks Coffee Japan will launch Discovery Series, a new collection of region-exclusive merchandise that succeeds the long-running Been There Series.

What makes the new series noteworthy is not simply the arrival of a refreshed design language. It also reveals a shift in how Starbucks chooses to engage with local communities and represent regional identity.

Designs That Begin with Local Voices

The Discovery Series was developed through conversations with Starbucks partners (employees) working across Japan.

When companies attempt to express regional culture, they often turn to famous landmarks and well-known tourist attractions. Starbucks chose a different starting point. Drawing from ideas shared by local partners, the designs incorporate everyday customs, cultural nuances, and activities that are deeply rooted in each region.

Rather than depicting places through the eyes of visitors, the series begins with the perspectives of the people who actually live there. That distinction forms the foundation of the collection.

Portraying Everyday Life Rather Than Landmarks

This philosophy is reflected in the motifs selected for each area.

Tokyo features crowded commuter trains. Osaka references the local habit of carrying complimentary candies and the city’s comedy culture. Fukuoka incorporates its distinctive “Yaa!” call often heard in local traditions and festivities.

These are not the kinds of images typically found on the cover of a travel guidebook. Yet for residents, they are familiar scenes woven into everyday life.

Instead of focusing solely on iconic landmarks, the collection highlights human habits, routines, and shared experiences. In that sense, the series attempts to translate not just what a city looks like, but what it feels like to spend time there.

Japanese Local Culture for a Global Audience

According to Starbucks, international travelers increasingly seek deeper cultural experiences and more localized discoveries during their visits to Japan.

The designs certainly include recognizable symbols such as Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms. At the same time, they incorporate smaller cultural references and everyday details that are more likely to be noticed by those who have spent meaningful time exploring the country.

The Discovery Series is therefore more than a collection of regional souvenirs. It functions as a way of carrying home memories of places visited and moments experienced. Starbucks describes the collection as a souvenir that brings home “stories and memories.”

Hidden Details and Playful Discoveries

The series contains another thoughtful design element.

Somewhere within every design, Starbucks’ iconic paper cup is hidden as a small visual surprise—a playful tradition carried over from the previous series.

Rather than simply presenting information about a place, the designs invite repeated discovery. The experience mirrors travel itself: noticing small details while walking through an unfamiliar city and finding meaning in unexpected moments.

A Collection Designed to Be Taken Home

Alongside classic mugs and stainless-steel bottles, the lineup introduces new items including pin badge sets, tote bags, and notebooks. The pin badges and notebooks, in particular, feel tailored to travelers—easy to pick up during a trip while offering strong collectability.

The intention appears to extend beyond displaying travel memories. These are objects designed to remain part of everyday life long after the journey has ended.

Bringing Home a Region’s Story

What the Discovery Series ultimately portrays is not merely a collection of landmarks. It is the accumulation of ordinary moments: a morning commute on a crowded train, a familiar local expression, or customs that have quietly endured within a community for generations.

These everyday experiences are what give a place its unique character.

Who, then, designs the memories we take home from a journey?

Starbucks’ new regional collection suggests an answer may be found not in tourist attractions, but in the voices of the people who know those places best.
