Starbucks Coffee nonowa Kunitachi, Japan's first Starbucks signing store where sign language is the common language, will open on June 27th.

STARBUCKS sign expressed in finger spelling
This store is one of Starbucks's stores symbolizing diversity and inclusion, with hearing and hearing-impaired partners working together and aiming to create a space where diverse people can be themselves and thrive.

Prior to the store's opening, Starbucks had been running "Sign Language Cafés" and "Sign Language Coffee Seminars" as activities independently planned and run by hearing-impaired partners. Starbucks currently has two signing stores in Malaysia, one in the United States, and one in China, and by incorporating the experience gained from these stores, the company will open its first store in Japan in Kunitachi, Tokyo.

In the center of the store, a sign that spells "STARBUCKS" in finger spelling (ASL: American Sign Language) is symbolically designed, and this special sign is also embroidered on the aprons worn by partners.

Next, the store's commitment to universality can be seen in its ordering style. When ordering products at the store, in addition to communicating in sign language, customers can also use voice, pointing, and writing.

The art was created by Kado Hidehiko, who engages in activities to connect hearing people with those who are hearing impaired in a fun way through art using sign language as a motif. The production of this art started with building a world view unique to this store through discussions with a partner who is hearing impaired and works at Starbucks.

The title of this Starbucks-exclusive piece is "Talkative hands." This work embodies our and Mr. Kado's hope that sign language will serve as a bridge that creates connections between people, and that we want to spread the world of sign language in a fun way throughout Japan from here.

The art also features greetings and many other Starbucks-related sign language expressions that you'll want to use right away, so be sure to check it out when you visit the store.
