HERITAGE represents history reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, while vertex embodies a vision of the future shaped by innovation and experimentation. Though positioned at opposite ends of the spectrum, both brands share NOT A HOTEL’s core philosophy: creating singular stay experiences rooted in the character of the land and the individuality of architecture.

“HERITAGE by NOT A HOTEL”: Carrying History into the Future
HERITAGE by NOT A HOTEL focuses on revitalizing historic architecture—such as temples, museums, and traditional buildings—not simply as preserved artifacts, but as places to stay and experience. Revenue generated through these renewed spaces is reinvested into restoration and preservation, supporting a sustainable future for both architecture and local culture.

The first project is located in Kyoto, within the grounds of Toji Temple (Kyoo Gokoku-ji), a UNESCO World Heritage site. A former temple lodging once used by monks and pilgrims is being reimagined through contemporary sensibilities, allowing the building itself to reemerge as a timeless work of architecture.

From Kyoto as its starting point, HERITAGE aims to expand across Japan, transforming underutilized historic assets into “heritage for the future” to be passed on to the next generation.

“vertex by NOT A HOTEL”: Imagining Future Lifestyles
In contrast, vertex by NOT A HOTEL is conceived as a platform for exploring future ways of living, where architecture, technology, and design intersect.

Its first project will take place in Okinawa, marking Zaha Hadid Architects’ first hotel project in Japan. Set amid white-sand beaches, forests, and dramatic coastal landscapes, the hotel is designed to integrate seamlessly with its natural surroundings while offering uninterrupted ocean views and a high level of privacy from every villa.

Terraced forms and canopies reinterpret the deep eaves of traditional Okinawan architecture, while environmental considerations—from natural ventilation and solar studies to the use of recycled materials—are embedded throughout the design. Here, the stay itself is envisioned as a journey of discovery, shaped by landscape, architecture, and innovation.

A New Vision of Hospitality by NOT A HOTEL
Guided by the concept of “your home anywhere in the world,” NOT A HOTEL has continuously explored new forms of living through architecture and technology.
With HERITAGE and vertex, this philosophy extends into hospitality.
By embracing both the inheritance of the past and the imagination of the future, NOT A HOTEL proposes a new outline for what a hotel can be—one that quietly yet decisively redefines the experience of staying.
