Giving Shape to “Wen Old Wisdom New” — The Aesthetic of Material and Time
Three signature series — OLDNEW, TRUE BLUE, and FILAMENT — take center stage in the exhibition. Each collection reflects Yoshida & Co.’s deep respect for Japanese materials, artisanal skill, and the quiet beauty that emerges as time passes.
OLDNEW
Inspired by Kyoto’s traditional craft of kakishibu dyeing, this series transforms plain white bags through repeated immersion in persimmon tannin and sun drying. The gradual aging process creates a rich, natural patina. The bags evolve with their owners — living objects that grow more beautiful through use.

TRUE BLUE
This collection features pieces dyed with natural indigo through the sukumo fermentation method. Using only biodegradable materials such as hemp thread, vegetable-tanned leather, and deer antler, the process of dyeing and drying produces a luminous, transparent blue. It is a study in circular beauty, where natural cycles meet human sensitivity.

FILAMENT
The new FILAMENT series draws inspiration from bamboo, a material deeply rooted in Japanese daily life. The bags combine flame-treated bamboo handles with supple leather, balancing structure and lightness. Over time, the textures of bamboo and brass subtly shift, gaining warmth and character through use.

All three lines are crafted in small quantities by master artisans, making this exhibition a rare opportunity to encounter their works together. Visitors can hold each piece, tracing the material stories and techniques behind them with their own hands.

Numazu Club — Where Nature and Architecture Tell the Story of Modern Travel
The exhibition takes place at Numazu Club, a lodging complex that weaves together a 1913 sukiya-style teahouse and a modern annex designed by architect Akira Watanabe.
The main building, designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, once served as a guesthouse for leading figures in politics and culture.

Located near Senbon Matsubara, where Mount Fuji overlooks Suruga Bay, the estate captures the atmosphere of sea breeze, pine scent, and shifting light. The annex is built with natural materials such as earthen walls, hanchiku (rammed earth), and Yoshino cedar, forming what the architect calls a “breathing structure” that changes with time.

At the heart of the courtyard, a reflective water basin mirrors the sky and surrounding trees, shifting from midday brightness to the subtle hues of dusk. The exhibition design draws inspiration from this interplay of light and shadow, echoing the processes of dyeing, drying, and crafting. The result is a tranquil, poetic harmony between architecture and handwork.

Where Craft and Architecture Intersect
There is profound significance in holding the LUGGAGE LABEL exhibition at Numazu Club. Both share a philosophy of embracing the passage of time — where craftsmanship and natural materials resonate in quiet harmony. Here, the everyday object of a bag transcends its function, becoming a vessel for memory, time, and personal journey.

“Wen Old Wisdom New” stands at the intersection of Japanese craftsmanship and architectural culture. Through the touch of material and the play of light, it reminds visitors of the origins of travel and the enduring bond between hand, heart, and place.
