Designing a lifestyle. Concept-based shared house "Fresh Share Jingumae" opens in Jingumae

Mar 5, 2013

Recently, there's been an unprecedented boom in share houses. Freshroom Co., Ltd., which operates 18 buildings with 330 rooms nationwide, has opened "FRESH share JINGUMAE," a concept share house for health-conscious women, in Jingumae 5-chome, Tokyo. Residents will begin moving in in March.

The project, which was launched by Freshroom CEO Takuhei Hara, who wanted to "create Japan's first concept share house that can be used by people with the same goals and objectives," was a collaboration between the design firm Eitaro Satake of STAR and the general incorporated association Run Girl as producer.

"This first concept share house is a facility for women who want to live a health-conscious and active lifestyle. We hope that health-conscious people who are interested in running and yoga will use it," says Satake. The facility, which was completed exactly as expected, is conveniently located within a 10-minute walk from Shibuya, Harajuku, and Omotesando, in a residential area surrounded by greenery and quiet streets. Popular running courses, such as Yoyogi Park and Jingu Gaien, are also nearby, making it a comfortable and livable environment. There are 22 private rooms in total. The facility is exclusively for women, and in addition to basic shared spaces like shower booths and a living room, it also offers a wide range of amenities, including an open rooftop terrace for yoga, a bathroom with a bathtub, a large shoe locker, and a delivery locker. The spacious open kitchen features "OSORO," a new eco-friendly and time-saving tableware brand. The powder room is stocked with popular organic cosmetics, and the library is stocked with health and beauty books. Various events are planned for residents, including a running and fitness event produced by Run Girl. Rent starts from 100,000 yen per month (deposit not included) with a minimum one-month contract. Regarding the facility's interior concept, Satake, who also designed the JR Osaka Mitsukoshi Isetan, said, "I created it from the perspective of designing the residents' lifestyles. In today's world, being beautiful means being beautiful from the inside out. To achieve that, you need to be healthy, so I approached the theme of 'health conscious.' I wanted to create a space where people can live a healthy lifestyle that's not too strict, but also relaxed, like women living on the West Coast. After an early morning run, they could buy vegetables at the Aoyama Farmers Market to make brunch, or enjoy yoga on the rooftop. I would be happy if the residents are fashionable and active, and it brings new encounters and becomes a place where living here is a status symbol." While combining the appeal of traditional share houses—relatively low cost, good housing, and the ability to live with friends in a family-like atmosphere—the concept also takes it upon itself to create the residents' lifestyles. This project brings new value to the saturated share house industry.

Eitaro Satake, a first-class architect, works as a brand architect, with the corporate message of creating brands through space. RunGirl is a group of female runners in the media, fashion, and beauty industries, whose activities are based on the theme of "enriching everyday life with the power of women who run." Since founding the general incorporated association RunGirl in 2010, they have hosted the annual women-only marathon event "RunGirl Night" in Odaiba, as well as developing running gear and collaborating with department stores.
