The large-scale exhibition "Kamo Katsuya Exhibition: 100 Headpieces," focusing on Kamo Katsuya, the hair designer for fashion shows of global brands, opened at Laforet Museum Harajuku on November 2nd and runs through the 18th. The exhibition features over 100 headpieces used in fashion shows and shoots around the world, as well as a recreated studio space, a Polaroid book revealing the creative process, and footage of fashion shows. "People say my work is unique, but for me it's completely natural. My ideas and designs come from everyday life," says Kamo. In addition to the headpieces, approximately 70 art objects he has personally created and scraps of visuals he has collected are on display in a recreated entrance to his home.
In addition, to coincide with this exhibition, a collection of around 100 headpieces carefully selected by Kamo himself, "GASBOOK 29 KATSUYA KAMO '100 HEADPIECES'" (3,675 yen, Gas as Interface) will be released. The art direction is by graphic designer Rikako Nagashima. The art book includes photographs taken by photographers Takashi Homma and Yasutomo Ebisu, as well as comments from designers Junya Watanabe, Jun Takahashi, and model Kiko Mizuhara.
Kamo joined Mods Hair in 1988. He moved to France from 1990 to 1992. After returning to Japan, he worked in a wide range of fields, primarily in fashion magazines, advertising, and shows. He has been involved in the Paris collections of Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons since 1996 and Undercover since 1997, and continues to work on them to this day. In 2003, he won the Grand Prix at the Mainichi Fashion Awards. Since 2005, he has expanded his activities overseas, appearing in fashion magazines such as the Italian and Paris editions of Vogue, New York Times Magazine, and Dazed & Confused, as well as art magazines like Wallpaper* Magazine. Since 2008, he has worked on fashion shows for Fendi and Chanel, and campaign visuals for brands like Kenzo. He currently works globally, primarily in Tokyo, New York, and Paris.
