Ginza's illuminations, "GINZA ILLUMINATION," are celebrating their fifth year and will be held on Ginza Street (Chuo Street) and Harumi Street from November 29th.
"GINZA ILLUMINATION" was started as part of a campaign to support the Tohoku region's recovery. This fifth event, titled "Hikarimichi 2015: Connecting the Future with Trees," will feature 100 new yew trees, approximately 3 meters tall, sourced from the Tohoku region and elsewhere, in addition to the 109 existing trees along Ginza Street from 1-chome to 8-chome, for a total of 209 trees. After the Hikarimichi event, the 100 new trees from the Tohoku region will be processed into wood chips and donated to Chuo Ward and various facilities and organizations in the Tohoku region to be used as teaching materials for workshops and in parks.
Additionally, the guardrails and streetlights on Harumi Street will each be decorated with special champagne gold LED lights, original to "GINZA ILLUMINATION." Together with Ginza Street, approximately 130,000 LEDs will create a gorgeous glow on the Ginza streets.
In addition, during the illumination period, Hikarimichi charity donation boxes to support Tohoku reconstruction will be set up in the stores of each GILC brand and in stores that support the cause. Donations collected will be donated to the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan, a public interest incorporated association.
