Exhibition in Marunouchi on craftsmanship in impoverished areas woven through clothing. UA Hirofumi Kurino and Stella Jean talk also included.

Dec 6, 2014

The exhibition "HONESTLY CRAFTED FASHION FROM AROUND THE WORLD" will be held at Marunouchi House on the 7th floor of Shin-Maru Building from December 8th.
The organizer of this exhibition, the Ethical Fashion Initiative, is a project launched in 2008 by the International Trade Center, a United Nations-affiliated organization. It supports economic independence through fashion, aiming to equip women facing economic and social challenges with skills and help them escape poverty.
The exhibition will feature photographs of craftsmanship in Burkina Faso, Haiti, Kenya, and Mali, portraits of artisans, and works using locally crafted fabrics.
One of the participating brands, TEGE UNITED ARROWS, was created through a collaboration between the project and UNITED ARROWS. The name "Tege" comes from the fact that the pronunciation of the word "tege" in the Bambara language, which is spoken locally, is reminiscent of the Japanese word "handicraft." The diverse colors and patterns of the textiles and colorful beadwork are handmade by African artisans. Other participating brands include OSKLEN and STELLA JEAN. STELLA JEAN uses fabrics from Burkina Faso in part of its collection, which are produced under the Ethical Fashion Initiative. A panel discussion will also be held on the 11th. The theme will be "How to make people happy with fashion," and guests include Simone Cipriani, Stella Jean, and Hirofumi Kurino. Additionally, a pop-up shop will be open at the United Arrows Marunouchi store during the event, featuring items from Tege United Arrows and Stella Jean.
