To commemorate the publication of Mari Natsuki's essay "We Were Born to Find Beauty" (Gentosha), a photo exhibition featuring Mari Natsuki taken by photographer Michael Thompson will be held at Daikanyama T-Site from the 19th.
Of the shots taken in New York, 12 will be exhibited at the venue as 40x50 inch prints, and one as a large 29x119 inch print. A behind-the-scenes video showing the shoot will also be screened. There will also be an autograph session with Natsuki and a talk show with a number of distinguished guests. Thompson, who studied under Irving Penn and has worked on covers for famous magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, as well as fashion and beauty photography, visited Japan in 2011 for the publication reception for his photo books, Portraits and Red Nude. During his stay, Thompson's agent visited Natsuki's office, and Natsuki casually mentioned, "I would love it if my favorite photographer in the world, Michael Thompson, could photograph me someday," which is how the project began. The shoot took place at Industria Superstudio in New York in July of last year. Hair was done by Serge Norman, who has worked on hair and makeup for top fashion magazines and advertisements, as well as Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker, and styling was done by Paul Cavaco, creative director of ALLURE.
